Iamia
Iamia is a small, beautiful village in the Messenia region of southwestern Peloponnese, Greece. Surrounded by rolling hills and olive trees, it gives visitors a real sense of traditional Greek rural life. Unlike the busy coastal towns, this village stays quiet and untouched, making it perfect for anyone looking for a peaceful getaway.
Iamia is known for its farming traditions, especially olive oil production. The area is filled with old olive trees that help support the well-known Kalamata olive industry. Although the village is peaceful, it is close to larger towns like Methoni and Pylos, so visitors can easily reach historic sites, including local Venetian castles and the Palace of Nestor, a Mycenaean-era site. The Ionian coast is also nearby, offering clean beaches and beautiful sea views.
Thanks to its natural beauty, traditional feel, and closeness to important historical and cultural sites, Iamia is a charming but less-visited spot in the heart of the Peloponnese.
FUN FACT: The people living in Iamia today originally came from Arcadia, a region in central Peloponnese. They moved here recently and brought their own customs, adding to the village’s unique culture.
How To Get There
To get from Kalamata International Airport to Iamia, a village in Greece’s Peloponnese region, you’ll travel about 50 kilometres. The easiest way is to rent a car or take a taxi. This direct trip takes about an hour and lets you enjoy the scenery along the way.
You can also use public transportation, but it usually takes longer and may involve several transfers. First, take a bus from the airport to Kalamata city centre. After that, catch another bus to a nearby town or village, then use local transport to reach Iamia. Because schedules can change and routes can be complicated, you should check the latest bus times before you travel to make sure you’re going in the right direction. If you want something in between, private transfer services offer pre-booked rides straight from the airport to Iamia at a reasonable cost.
