Charokopio is a small yet charming village in the southwestern Peloponnese, Greece, located in Messenia, just a short distance from the coastal town of Koroni. Surrounded by rolling olive trees and scenic countryside, Charokopio offers a peaceful and authentic Greek experience away from the bustle of more prominent tourist destinations. The village is known for its strong agricultural roots, particularly in olive oil production, which plays a significant role in the local economy.
Despite its quiet atmosphere, Charokopio provides essential amenities, including traditional tavernas, small shops, and friendly local hospitality. Its location makes it an ideal area for exploring the nearby beaches of Zaga and Memi and the historic town of Koroni, with its Venetian castle, picturesque harbour, and vibrant seaside promenade. Additionally, the region’s rich history and unspoiled natural beauty make Charokopio an excellent choice for travellers seeking a more immersive and relaxed experience in the heart of the Peloponnese.
FUN FACT: The name Charokopio is the same as the university in Athens, Harokopio University of Athens! Very interesting.
How To Get There
Travelling from Kalamata International Airport to Charokopio can be accomplished through several methods. The most direct and flexible option is to rent a car or hire a taxi, covering the approximately 36-kilometre distance in about 47 minutes. This route allows travellers to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Peloponnese at their own pace.
Alternatively, public transportation is available, though it involves multiple transfers. Passengers can take a bus from the airport to Kalamata city centre, then transfer to a bus heading towards Koroni, disembarking at Charokopio. Depending on connection times, this journey can take around 2 hours and 54 minutes. Private transfer services are also available for those seeking a balance between convenience and cost, offering pre-booked rides directly from the airport to Charokopio.
These services provide a comfortable and efficient alternative to public transportation.
Restaurants
Nikos Taverna
Nikos Taverna in Charakopio is one of my favourite restaurants and an absolute gem I always look forward to visiting. My experience there has been nothing short of amazing, especially when I enjoyed their incredible pork souvlaki sticks, which are the best on the menu. The food is always delicious, made with care and tradition, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere makes every visit special. Being related to the owner and the workers adds an extra layer of connection, but beyond that, they are truly lovely people who take pride in serving the best homemade Greek dishes. Whether the food quality or the hospitality, Nikos Taverna never disappoints.
