Areopoli

Areopoli is a historic town in the Mani Peninsula of the Peloponnese, Greece, known for its well-preserved stone architecture, deep-rooted traditions, and significant role in Greek history. Perched on the rugged landscape of Laconia, this village is characterised by its iconic stone towers, narrow cobbled streets, and neoclassical buildings, reflecting the region’s proud and independent spirit. The town played a crucial role in the Greek War of Independence, as it was here that the Maniots, led by Petros Mavromichalis, declared their uprising against the Ottoman Empire on March 17, 1821.

FUN FACT: Areopoli translates to “City of Ares,” the ancient Greek god of war. In 1912, it was renamed from its former Slavic name, Tsimova, to honour its role in Greece’s fight for independence! That is amazing!
